One pretty good way to weatherproof those tins is using pieces of innertube, sometimes people call it “ranger bands” around the opening edges. Lots of folks use them to hold things closed, or together, as do I, but they also do a good job of preventing water from intruding.
Since there are multiple sizes of bicycle tubes, and even motorcycles that use them, plus truck tires that do, the choices are out there for various sizes.
Beats trying to use and re-use tapes like duct or electrical, etc. And you can pick how WIDE to cut them, as well.
