There are really two options that anyone in this position can take. The first is to give up on the old home and start over, building or buying somewhere else.
One thing I made a habit of doing is an after-action review of any major disasters. That means whatever is reported in the news, although I do have few other sources.
People still got sick during the Great Depression. Many died from malnutrition or starvation. Others were so emotionally impacted that they committed suicide.
